The Faculty offers a wide range of degree programmes: 15 bachelor’s programmes and over 35 master’s specializations. Our research, which is internationally widely acclaimed, covers the following fields: Archaeology, Cultural Studies, History, International Relations, Media and Journalism, Language and Literary Studies, and Linguistics.

Researchers and teaching staff in the Neurolinguistics group are currently developing new projects in the field of blended learning, among which the development of serious games and apps for clinical purposes.

Job description

The Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen is seeking an Assistant Professor in Neurolinguistics (60% teaching, 40% research). The candidate should be able to teach in the bachelor’s programme Linguistics, the master’s programme Linguistics and the Erasmus Mundus master’s programme in Clinical Linguistics (EMCL).

The research of the candidate will form part of the Center for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG) research institute, more in particular the Neurolinguistics and Language Development research group. The candidate will also be affiliated with the Research School of Behavioural and Cognitive Neurosciences (BCN) and the NeuroImaging Center (NIC) in Groningen.

Specific tasks:

  • teaching course units in the field of neurolinguistics within the bachelor’s programme Linguistics, the master’s programme Linguistics (in particular Neurolinguistics) and the European joint master in Clinical Linguistics EMCL
  • supervising bachelor’s and master’s theses in the field of neurolinguistics
  • conducting research at a recognized level in the field of neurolinguistics
  • external grant acquisition
  • performing administrative and organizational duties.

Qualifications

In addition to a number of basic requirements set by the University of Groningen, such as excellent social and communicative skills, presentation skills, coaching skills and a results-oriented attitude, we are looking for a candidate who has a PhD in the field of Neurolinguistics or Clinical Linguistics and,

in the area of teaching:

  • has teaching experience in the field of neurolinguistics at university level and proven didactic abilities
  • has gained the University Teaching Qualification or is prepared to do so within a year
  • is able to make contributions to the development of course units, partly by actively linking teaching to research
  • preferably has experience with the development of blended learning.

In the area of research:

  • has an excellent research track record with at least two refereed international publications every year
  • has extensive experience with research in the field of speech and language disorders in adults or children and/or with techniques of neuroimaging (among which fMRI or EEG) or neurostimulation and language (like TMS, tDCS)
  • is able to set up his or her own research line and publish within it, dovetailing with the profile of the research institute
  • has an outstanding international network
  • has attracted significant funding
  • is experienced in PhD supervision or is prepared to play an active role in this.

In the area of management and organization:

  • is able to make a constructive contribution to interdisciplinary collaboration and a friendly atmosphere within the faculty and university
  • has demonstrable management capacities and organization skills.

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen is offering a salary based on qualifications and experience of between € 3,427 (scale 11 CAO Dutch Universities) and € 5,330 (scale 12) gross per month for a full-time position. The appointment will be initially for a period of two years, with the possibility of appointment for an indefinite period. Before the end of the temporary appointment, there will be an assessment of performance based on established criteria including research and teaching qualifications. A positive appraisal will lead to a permanent position.
